White-throated capuchin monkeys can be found in primary and
secondary evergreen rainforests, mangroves, and deciduous dry
forests from Ecuador to Honduras.
They have white to yellowish throats, heads, and shoulders,
with black backs. The hair on the crown of the head forms a V.
Their tails are prehensile. The average height for both male
and female white-throated capuchins is approximately 13 to 17
inches, with females weighing about 5.9 pounds and males
weighing an average of 8.5 pounds.
These monkeys live in groups of 10 to 20 individuals, made
up of more females than males. Males leave the group, sometimes
remaining solitary for a time before joining another group.
Both males and females reach sexual maturity about 3 years
of age. The interval between births is 19 months, with a
gestation period of about 5.5 months. The average life span for
a white-throated capuchin is 46.9 years.
Their diet is made up of 65% fruit, 15% leaves, and 20%
berries, nuts, seeds, shoots, buds, flowers (white-throated
capuchins eat 24 species), gums, bark, and animals such as
insects, small vertebrates, eggs, crabs, and oysters.
