The HSUS produced a white paper on animal pain and distress that was first distributed at a press conference held in April 2000. The white paper addresses various issues such as public concerns and attitudes, problems with the current pain and distress reporting system in the United States, an international comparison of pain and distress reporting, problems and technical issues regarding recognition and alleviation of pain and distress, examples of research that cause pain and distress, components of The HSUS's Pain and Distress Campaign, and recommendations and proposals.
