Rats used in research are not protected from mistreatment even by the Animal Welfare Act. |
Approximately 20 million vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish) are used annually in biomedical research and testing in the United States. Although some argue this number is declining, the recent drastic increase in the use of transgenic and genetically modified mice whose numbers are not included would greatly increase this total.
We would like to see the day when animals are no longer used in harmful research; however, we believe the most urgent public priority is eliminating pain and distress among laboratory animals.
The following brochure outlines the issue of pain and distress in laboratory animals and how The HSUS is working to end their suffering.
