Chimpanzee Research: Overview of Research Uses and Costs |
 |
 |
 |
The HSUS estimates that the federal government* spends approximately $20-25 million of taxpayers' money per year on chimpanzee research and maintenance. This number was estimated using the data available on the Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP) website and the financial data on the National Institutes of Health Office of Extramural Research (OER) website. Unfortunately, only an estimate could be made due to the lack of data regarding the funding of subprojects and National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural projects.
*It is important to note that the data on this page involves only federal funding and does not include privately funded research, such as that conducted by pharmaceutical companies.
Below is a basic analysis of federally funded research on chimpanzees in the United States from 2000-2006.

-
Invasive—inoculation with an infectious agent, surgery or biopsy conducted for the sake of research and not for the sake of the chimpanzee, and/or drug testing
-
Minimally invasive—a minor procedure, such as venipuncture, was performed
-
Not invasive—the animal received no physical or psychological insult |
