Dissection: Gender, Teacher Attitudes and Conscientious Objection |
This study, conducted in 2001, examines the relationship of animal dissection to gender imbalances in the sciences by exploring whether student gender affected several factors in classroom dissections in Massachusetts. Findings suggest that conscientious objection to dissection occurs in most Massachusetts classrooms, that the majority of objectors are female, and that most are granted alternatives, though a small fraction—comprising hundreds of students—is not. The study suggests that legislation to allow alternatives to dissection would be acceptable to the majority of science teachers. To read the study in its entirety, download the PDF.
