The HSUS Offers Reward In Dixon, Calif. Farm Chickens' Thefts and Deaths

December 12, 2007

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the deaths of about 20 chickens and the thefts of more than 600 chickens from Eatwell Farm in Dixon, Calif.

The Case:

News reports give the following account: Since Oct. 11, more than 600 chickens have been stolen from Nigel Walker's Eatwell Farm in Dixon, Calif. On one occasion, a farm worker saw two men killing chickens and throwing them into the back of a 1980s-style pickup truck before scrambling. In early November, about 20 birds were killed while roosting in their coop. Ten shotgun shells were found in the area.

Animal Cruelty:

Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community.  The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented.  Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

"Those who abuse animals can be dangerous to people as well," said Paul Bruce, The HSUS' West Coast Regional Office's program coordinator.  "All animals deserve our protection, including those used in the production of food."

The Investigators:

The Solano County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Deputy Jim Currie at 707-421-7090. With The HSUS' contribution, the reward offered in this case has reached $3,500.

Resources:

The HSUS Animal Cruelty Campaign raises public awareness and educates communities about the connection between animal cruelty and human violence while providing a variety of resources to law enforcement agencies, social work professionals, educators, legislators and families. The HSUS offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country and works to strengthen laws against animal cruelty. Visit: humanesociety.org/cruelty.
