Dogfighting is a dead end
Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States released the following statement in response to Michael Vick’s sentencing on federal dogfighting charges:
Michael Vick committed a reckless and unconscionable crime, and the sentence meted out today is fitting and appropriate. We hope that anyone participating in the sordid activity realizes that dogfighting is a dead end and no good can come from it.
The Vick case has had a transformative effect on the issue of dogfighting in America. Not only has Bad Newz Kennels been shut down, but there is a newfound awareness and resolve. There has been a tripling in arrests of dogfighters since the Vick case came to light. The Humane Society of the United States expects to work on upgrades of dogfighting statutes in as many as 25 states in 2008.
The HSUS has released radio and television Public Service Announcements condemning dogfighting. The radio spot has been played more than 40,000 times, and the television spot, featuring hip hop mogul Russell Simmons, is also playing across the nation.
