The HSUS Calls For Detention, Counseling in Alabama Puppy Burning Case

September 14, 2007

The Humane Society of the United States wrote Baldwin County District Attorney Judy Newcomb on Thursday, demanding strong prosecution of an animal cruelty case in which a juvenile is accused of setting a puppy on fire earlier this month.

"The alleged actions of this young man should be viewed as a red flag signaling the potential for future violence, including against people," said Dale Bartlett, The HSUS' deputy director for animal cruelty issues.

The HSUS urged Newcomb to seek detention, mandatory psychological counseling and a prohibition on owning animals upon any conviction in this case. The HSUS offered to provide information about psychological counseling programs designed specifically for children who abuse animals.
