Circulation of Cockfighting Magazines Drops Off |

Cockfighters are not only losing face with the public for their cruelty to animals, they are losing ground among the faithful as well.
The practice of pitting bird against bird in bloody battles for the amusement of spectators and gamblers is being swamped by a rising tide of public opinion, which is increasingly turning against animal fighting.
Nevertheless, die-hard cockfighters still lurk in many corners of the country.
The cockfighting industry even supports three magazines, The Gamecock, Grit & Steel and The Feathered Warrior, for devotees of this cruel pastime.
But the two largest of these magazines, The Gamecock and Grit & Steel, have suffered a huge drop in circulation in recent years, according to the latest circulation statements filed with the U.S. Postal Service.
A Losing Game
The erosion of the cockfighting magazine subscription base coincides with the passage of tougher laws against this blood sport.
Cockfighting is now illegal in all 50 states, and a felony in 37.
The HSUS aims to make cockfighting a felony in all 50 states, to promote the enforcement of cockfighting laws—and to put the cockfighting industry out of business once and for all.
