The term "addling" means loss of development, and is commonly
used to refer to any process by which an egg ceases to be
viable. Addling can occur through natural processes, when
incubation is interrupted long enough for eggs to cool and for
embryonic development to be arrested. Humans may also humanely
manage bird populations by using addling techniques to prevent
egg development.
This protocol is written specifically for Canada geese
(Branta canadensis), and is intended to help minimize
human-goose conflicts where addling programs for these birds
are desired.
Egg addling may only be carried
out under a federal permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service.
