The Southwest Regional Office of The Humane Society of the United States, located in Arlington, Texas, works on behalf of the animals and people in seven states: Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Active in promoting animal welfare legislation, the office has helped ensure that many important laws were enacted: In Texas, final passage of a felony cruelty law as well as a law mandating the registration and proper care of exotic animals was cause for celebration. In Arizona, a bill passed that makes a veterinarian responsible for reporting, in writing, any dogfighting or animal abuse to a local law enforcement agency. In Arkansas, legislation passed that gives the courts the ability to order a person found guilty of animal cruelty to receive a psychiatric or psychological evaluation and counseling. These laws, and many others, came about through the direct involvement of this region and caring, informed citizens.
Recognizing the important connection between animals and people, the regional office also presents programs on the link between domestic violence and animal cruelty. Struggling American Indian reservations are recipients of much needed veterinary care for companion animals as our programs expand to include more native nations in this critically important outreach effort. Presentations on disaster preparedness have helped many communities enact workable disaster management plans. Ongoing visits to the many sheltering facilities and animal welfare organizations within the region provides key assistance as those agencies work to improve the quality of care and service to the people and animals in their area.
