| Sarah Speed is HSUS's Pennsylvania director. |
The HSUS welcomes Sarah Speed and Patrick Kwan to the Mid-Atlantic region. Sarah and Patrick will represent The HSUS as state directors for Pennsylvania and New York, respectively.
Sarah has recently relocated to Harrisburg, Pa. She was born and raised in California, where she attended UCLA and the University of San Diego School of Law, graduating in May of 2007. Sarah passed the California Bar in July.
While at law school, Sarah instituted a foster care program for the pets of domestic violence victims. She also began the first animal abuse counseling program in the country and served as the point person on S.B. 353, which permits animals to be included on protective orders in cases of domestic violence. Gov. Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law in August 2007.
Sarah is married to James Speed, a former U.S. Marine and current college student. Sarah and Jim are “maidservants” to Lola and Sonia, three-year-old pit bull mixes rescued from a Los Angeles shelter, and Angel, a formerly feral cat. Sarah loves quilting and has recently joined the band Fat Cat Friday as lead singer.

| Patrick Kwan is HSUS's New York director. |
Born in Harlem and raised in Chinatown, Patrick is a genuine New Yorker who currently lives in Brooklyn.
Before joining The HSUS, he worked at a public relations firm where he handled media for the City of New York’s animal rescue efforts through the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. He also handled media for historic Chinatown through the September 11th Fund, for which he was honored with the public relations industry’s highest honor, the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil award.
Previously, he worked as the executive director of the Student Animal Rights Alliance, was field organizer for Amnesty International USA, and a media assistant for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Patrick set out on his career path while still a teen. He organized an animal rights club at his high school and helped educate others about vegetarianism and dissection alternatives. He was even featured in an issue of KIND News. Fluent in the Cantonese dialect of Chinese and an expert on vegetarian dining in New York City, Patrick brings experience, exuberance and the energy of youth to New York as we step up our efforts in this major marketplace.
Pennsylvania animal advocates can contact Sarah Speed at 717-440-5527. Patrick Kwan is at 917-331-7187 for New York members and supporters.
