The Mid-Atlantic Regional Office of The Humane Society of the United States, located in Flanders, New Jersey, serves the animals and people of four states: Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania—a culturally diverse area of the nation that's home to nearly 17 percent of HSUS members and constituents.
MARO has been instrumental in forging many model legislative efforts that have been copied across the country, such as the very first license plate created to fund state spay/neuter programs. The office works cooperatively with state federations and national animal protection groups on investigations, education, and litigation to generate significant improvements in the field of animal welfare. For example, legislation initiated by MARO resulted in an intensive training program administered by the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice to ensure that municipal anti-cruelty statutes are properly enforced.
What's more, the office staff disseminates thousands of informational brochures and instructional materials and answers hundreds of calls for help every month. In addition, the MARO staff helps coordinate a variety of hands-on field projects. For example, it teamed up with the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to start a goose egg addling pilot project (making the eggs inviable) as a humane alternative to goose round-ups.
