Amanda Arrington is the North Carolina state director of The Humane Society United States. Prior to joining The HSUS in May 2008 she was an office manager.
Arrington is the chairperson of the Durham County Animal Control Advisory Committee and is on the board of the Durham Interneighborhood Council. She is also currently a member of the board of Independent Animal Rescue and directs the group’s Community Spay Neuter Program.
As founder and director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs, a Durham-based group that educates the community about the detrimental effects of chaining, Arrington provides materials and volunteer labor to build fences for dogs kept on chains. The group is working to pass tougher chaining legislation, with Durham and Orange County both recently passing legislation. To date, the Coalition has freed more than 130 dogs around the Triangle area from their chains, providing houses and medical care where needed and facilitating the sterilization of each dog.
Arrington is a recipient of the Interneighborhood Council’s “Good Neighbor” Award and the Independent Weekly’s 2008 Citizen Award for her work on behalf of animals and her leadership in building coalitions between animal welfare groups and other citizen groups in Durham.
