Since the first
Genesis Awards in 1986, the annual Hollywood event has attracted an impressive and diverse array of stars who have turned out to show their support for the Genesis mission. From the late James Stewart and Jack Lemmon to Pierce Brosnan, Prince, Kelsey Grammar, Ellen DeGeneres, Daryl Hannah and Alicia Silverstone, the Genesis Awards continues to roll out the red carpet on behalf of animals with the help of Hollywood's most compassionate stars, some of whom have been awardees themselves.
Just a few of the celebrities who've appeared at the Genesis Awards:
Prince. The enigmatic music icon turned out for the Fourteenth Annual Genesis Awards to pick up his special achievement award for the liner notes to his CD, Rave UN2 The Joy Fantastic, which poignantly condemn the suffering of sheep used in wool production. Prince enthused: "I receive many awards, but I'm truly humbled just being here. This has been a moving experience, just being in the room with all of you."
Alicia Silverstone. Film and television star Silverstone has been a regular attendee and is a proud three-time Genesis award-winner for executive producing the popular children's series, Braceface. Says Silverstone, a vegan of five years: "It's never too early to start educating kids and young adults about how to live a compassionate and responsible lifestyle."
Sean Astin. The Lord of the Rings trilogy star experienced the power of Genesis for the first time at the Eighteenth Annual Genesis Awards when he presented the prestigious Guest of Honor accolade to "Born Free" star and animal campaigner Virginia McKenna. Astin attributes his interest in animal issues to his wife and children, and friends in the movement who have drawn his attention to the exotic pet trade.
Daryl Hannah. A vegetarian for three decades, Hannah believes "We need to be more conscious of what we do, what we buy, and what we support." As presenter of the Outstanding Feature Film Award to the comedy Legally Blonde 2: Red White & Blonde, Hannah commented: "Humor is the best way to get a message across," But the actress admitted that she welled up with tears many times throughout 2004's moving Genesis ceremony.
Wendie Malick. Star of TV's Just Shoot Me and Frasier, Malick is a two-time Genesis host and a frequent presenter who lends her support to animal, environmental and humanitarian causes, and believes fervently in the power of the awards. "The Genesis Awards has helped to raise awareness locally, nationally and globally," she explains.
