The 11th Annual Genesis Awards, co-hosted by Bonnie Hunt and
Charles Shaughnessy, featured an even more famous pair, David
Crosby and Graham Nash, who performed their award-winning
number, "To the Last Whale."
Nearly 1,000 people filled the Los Angeles Ballroom of the
Century Plaza Hotel, where 20 different Genesis winners were
honored, including Fly Away Home, Ellen,
Dateline NBC, Inside Edition, Gulliver's
Travels, and The Free Willy Story: Keiko's Journey
Home.
Michelle Phillips, of The Mamas and The Papas fame,
presented the Doris Day Music Award to Crosby and Nash for
their 1975 hit, the hauntingly melodic "To the Last Whale,"
while the Dolly Green Special Achievement Award was presented
to wildlife photographer Karl Ammann for his unsettling exposes
of the horrific trade in African bushmeat, in which great apes
are slaughtered for food.
Presenters included Alicia Silverstone, James Cromwell,
Kevin Nealon, Lynn Redgrave, Linda Evans, and Sparky, the dog
from the hit film Michael. The show was taped for later
broadcast on the Discovery Channel for the seventh consecutive
year, and for the first time on the new Animal Planet
network.
Most Memorable Moments:
The Crosby and Nash performance, of course, but also when
Bonnie Hunt and Beethoven the dog reunited on stage for the
first time since making the film, Beethoven.
