The Tenth Annual Genesis Awards set an attendance record when
1,253 people poured into the International Ballroom of The
Beverly Hilton to watch 22 winners receive their honors during
this special anniversary celebration.
Some of the honorees included the feature film, Babe,
the movie classic Planet of the Apes, TV programs
Chicago Hope and Mad About You, and The
Washington Post. The Doris Day Music Award was presented to
Nicholas Brandt for directing Michael Jackson's "Earth Song"
music video. The Dolly Green Special Achievement Award was
presented by Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith to marine
photographer/cinematographer Bob Talbot for his stunning orca
footage in Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home.
The tenth-annual event was co-hosted by Leeza Gibbons and
Dennis Franz, and presenters included not only Bronsan and
Smith, but also Alicia Silverstone, James Cromwell, Courtney
Thorne-Smith, Hector Elizondo, Peri Gilpin, Judith Light,
Alexandra Paul, Bob Goen, and Ed Begley Jr. For the sixth
consecutive year, the show was taped for later broadcast on the
Discovery Channel.
Most Memorable Moments:
Guest of Honor recognition went to tennis legend and
animal/environmental campaigner Martina Navratilova
(accompanied by her toy fox terrier, K.D.) and Dr. Jeffrey M.
Masson, author of the 1996 New York Times bestseller,
When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals.
Murray, the dog from Mad About You, and a Babe
look-alike stole the show.
