The highlight of the Eighth Annual Genesis Awards came when one
legend acknowledged another: Jack Lemmon presented the Lifetime
Achievement Award to world-renowned chimpanzee expert, Dr. Jane
Goodall, who received a thunderous standing ovation from the
nearly 1,000 people in the Los Angeles Ballroom of the Century
Plaza Hotel.
Sponsored for the second consecutive year by John Paul
Mitchell Systems, Inc. and co-hosted by Brooke Shields and
Scott Hamilton, the Genesis Awards honored 24 different
winners, including Hard Copy, I Witness Video,
The Simpsons, Time magazine, and the hit feature
film, Free Willy. The Doris Day Music Award was
presented to Paul McCartney for his antivivisection anthem,
"Looking for Changes," from his album, Off the
Ground.
Celebrity presenters included Shari Lewis and Charlie Horse,
Jane Leeves and four-legged co-star Eddie, Candace Cameron,
Jason James Richter, and Stephanie Zimbalist. For the fourth
consecutive year, the show was taped for broadcast on the
Discovery Channel.
Most Memorable Moments:
The Jane Goodall presentation, of course. It was only the
second Lifetime Achievement Award presented in Genesis's
history; the first went to Jacques Cousteau. But the audience
also rose to its feet when Sidney Poitier presented the Film
Classic Award to Stanley Kramer, who produced and directed the
poignant 1971 film, Bless the Beasts and Children.
