The Sixth Annual Genesis Awards, hosted by Loretta Swit and
William Shatner, was held before a dinner-time audience of
nearly 1,000 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly
Hilton, where awards were passed out in 24 categories.
Winners included the family feature film, White Fang,
the PBS documentary Diet for a New America, NBC's
Quantum Leap, and People magazine. The Doris Day
Music Award was presented to composers Barry DeVorzon and Perry
Botkin Jr. for their classic composition, "Bless the Beasts and
Children."
Celebrity presenters included Peter Falk, Bebe Neuwirth,
Walter Matthau and Milton Berle. Three distinguished guests of
honor presided over the event: John Paul Jones DeJoria, CEO of
John Paul Mitchell Systems, Inc., the pioneer of cruelty-free
hair-care products; Richard O'Barry, founder/director of The
Dolphin Project and crusader against keeping marine mammals in
captivity; and Becky Sandstedt, a South St. Paul, Minnesota
waitress whose daily video log of routine stockyard abuse led
NBC's Expose with Tom Brokaw to produce the Genesis
Award-winning segment, "Downers."
For the second consecutive year, the awards ceremony was
taped for broadcast on the Discovery Channel.
