To accommodate the 600 people who planned to attend, the Fourth
Annual Genesis Awards moved to the larger Beverly Hilton hotel,
where we held a lunch-time ceremony for our suddenly burgeoning
audience. Likewise, the ceremony's date was moved to February
1990 to facilitate a calendar-year judging process, hence the
apparent "skipping" of the year 1989.
The larger audience coincided with a larger number of
awards. An all-time high of 27 awards were presented by
celebrities such as Bea Arthur, Lindsay Wagner, Rue McClanahan
and Sid Caesar. Winners included the feature film The
Bear, the hit sitcom Roseanne, TV news anchor Bree
Walker, CNN, commentator Charles Kuralt, and Newsweek
magazine.
The guest of honor was Tom Regan, Ph.D., professor of
philosophy at North Carolina State University, author of The
Case for Animal Rights, and organizer of the first national
March for the Animals on June 10, 1990, in Washington, D.C.
Most Memorable Moment:
Not so much a memorable moment, but a notable trend: the
sheer quantity and quality of entries—evidence that the media
have begun embracing animal issues like never before.
