The Third Annual Genesis Awards, held in November, introduced
two new awards: the Film Classic Award and the Guest of Honor
Award.
Bambi won the Film Classic Award for its anti-hunting
message, and the Guest of Honor Award, given to a person who
has made positive animal-related news, was presented to Ron
Morris of Operation Rescue, who saved three Alaskan whales
trapped under the ice.
Most Memorable Moments:
Kazuyoshi Okuyama, executive producer of Hachi-Ko, a
Japanese film that poignantly chronicles the unbreakable bond
between owner and companion dog, flew all the way from Japan to
accept the Genesis Award in the feature film category. If
audience members were moved by Kazuyoshi's gesture and his
movie—which they decidedly were—they were stirred even more by
the evening's events. The following day, many called to say
they had a life-changing experience. They vowed to become
vegetarians, to rid their closets of "those old fur coats" or
never to eat veal again.
