Over the years,
Genesis Awards have been presented to a wide, international spectrum of writers, musicians, cartoonists, producers, journalists, and commentators, not to mention countless movies and TV programs, reflecting the depth and breadth of support that the media have afforded animal issues.
Clicking off just some of the programs and people who have won Genesis Awards provides not only a glimpse of the vast array of media attracted to animal issues, but also a snapshot of America's ever-changing pop-culture landscape: Night Court, Paul Harvey, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Andy Rooney, Michael Jackson, Highway to Heaven, General Hospital, Berke Breathed, CNN, Designing Women, The Discovery Channel, City Slickers, The Village Voice, Megadeth, The Simpsons, Paul McCartney, Hugh Downs, Sports Illustrated, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Time magazine, Babe, Mad About You, Baywatch, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frontline, Patrick McDonnell, Spin City, Judging Amy, The Washington Post, Chicken Run, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, and Dr. Dolittle 2.
Every year, many animal-loving celebrities volunteer to present the Genesis Awards. Their canine counterparts such as Verdel, the pooch from As Good As It Gets, or Abby and Duke, two search-and-rescue dogs who worked the World Trade Center site, have also graced the Genesis stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. And, of course, these animals often steal the show—although it's not always easy.
The Genesis Awards has played host to countless memorable moments—that even the most adorable dog couldn't upstage. Like in 2000 when Prince made a surprise visit to accept his special artistic achievement award. Or in 1998 when marine wildlife conservationist, Captain Paul Watson renounced his Canadian citizenship because of his country's continued seal hunting. Or in 1994 when Dr. Jane Goodall received a lifetime achievement award amid a thunderous standing ovation.
As the Hollywood office of The HSUS prepares to honor the upcoming Genesis Award winners, look back and learn who previously took home the trophies. And learn a little about the rich history of this annual gathering of media dignitaries who truly care about the animal kingdom.
