The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) participates in international agreements that either directly or indirectly affect animals. We are involved in the International Whaling Commission, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, The Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife of the wider Caribbean, the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora, and the International Dolphin Conservation Agreement, among others. We also cover treaties with less obvious effects on animals—those under the auspices of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, for instance.
Our participation in treaties varies: We generally attend meetings of treaty members, draft policy and technical papers, lobby member countries, and suggest language for treaties at the drafting stage or amendments existing. The HSUS also educates the international press, the public, and our members about the good or harm done to animals by countries participating in these agreements.
