Since its founding in 1990, Humane Society International's European Office has had a continual record of success in working with members of the European Parliament (MEPs), the European Commission and national legislators in advancing animal protection.
Its record of success has included a ban in Europe on setting on dolphins in the course of European Union (EU) fishing; a complete ban on the use of pelagic driftnets for EU countries; raising consumer awareness about the treatment of horses in the production of the hormone replacement drug, Premarin; and more recently, in gaining majority European Parliament (EP) support for an EU ban on the import, export, and trade in seal products. In addition to these important victories, we have been delighted to announce that after years of campaigning by the Humane Society International, in June 2007, the European Parliament voted for a complete EU ban on the import, export and trade in cat and dog fur, which is due to be fully implemented by the end of 2008.
HSI Europe works closely not only with members of the European Parliament but with national legislatures, the European Commission and non-governmental groups throughout Europe. HSI Europe has made presentations to the European Parliament's Intergroup on Animal Welfare and to the British Parliament's All Party Animal Caucus. Interviews with HSI Europe have appeared on BBC News, CBS News, The Extraordinary Garden (Belgium TV) and in European newspapers.
