Since 1999, Humane Society International has worked with ARCA Brasil to improve animal welfare laws and attitudes in Brazil.
ARCA Brasil works primarily on companion animal, farm animal and wildlife issues. It differs from other animal welfare groups by focusing on education, enrichment and community outreach rather than operating a shelter or working directly with animals.
HSI's relationship with ARCA Brasil began in 1999, when HSI's Executive Director Neil Trent gave a presentation on HSUS's First Strike Program at the first Latin American Animal Welfare Conference. In 2000, HSI sponsored a presentation on illegal animal fighting, a hot issue in Brazil. And in 2003, HSI supported and participated in a seminar called "Public Policies on Animal Care and Control—Animal Legislation," which ARCA Brasil organized. Each of the presentations brought together more than 500 participants.
HSI has also supported the publication of ARCA Brasil's bimonthly newsletter, which reaches a broad audience and promotes a strong message of compassion towards animals.
Marco Ciampi, ARCA Brasil's president, has attended our Animal Care Expo each year since 1999.
In addition to outreach programs and humane education seminars, ARCA Brasil also sponsors veterinary conferences and classes that emphasize to veterinarians, veterinarian techs and others in the animal care field the value of more efficient medical procedures and updated sterilization techniques and the importance of passing strong animal welfare policies.
ARCA Brasil was designated a HSI Animal Advocate in 2001.
