Canadian Seafood Boycott Launches in Europe
4 October 2009
Today in Brussels, Humane Society International and GAIA launched a historic new phase in the campaign to end the commercial seal hunt.
At a VIP event presenting an exhibition of harp seal photos by the world renowned photographer and TV personality Nigel Barker, we announced the expansion of the ProtectSeals Canadian seafood boycott to Europe. This will substantially increase the pressure on the Canadian government and fishing industry to end the brutal slaughter for once and for all.

Nigel Barker, who gave a rousing speech at the event, said: "I’m excited to be in Europe after the success we’ve had with the European ban on seal imports, but saddened that I am still talking about the impending hunt that looms ahead for these beautiful animals.
"I do believe though that this is a winnable situation for all concerned. The seals get to live out their lives as nature intended and we can continue to live in a humane a way as possible."
Following hot on the heels of the EU ban, HSI and GAIA hope that restaurants throughout Europe will show their disapproval for Canada’s continued butchery of defenceless animals by signing the pledge to take Canadian seafood off their menus until the killing ends.
UK Director of HSI, Mark Glover said, during the launch: "This is a campaign we have to win and we will win. The seal hunt brings shame on Canada and the world is watching. By simply not buying Canadian seafood, consumers can take part in a positive action of their own to stop the slaughter, at no cost. It’s that simple."
Nigel Barker's 'A Sealed Fate?' exhibition, which was given a great reception in Brussels today, will be shown in Amsterdam on 7 October.
