LEGAL CLERKSHIPS, Animal Protection Litigation Seeking several conscientious law students for unpaid Fall 2009 legal clerkships within the Animal Protection Litigation Section in our Washington, D.C., office. Law clerks will work closely with attorneys and be integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal courts. STAFF VETERINARIAN, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, Murchison, Texas Seeking a Staff Veterinarian, either full or part-time, for the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, a 1,300-acre animal sanctuary located in East Texas. This position provides veterinary care and medical management for a wide variety of animals, including carnivores, primates, wild and domestic hoofstock, elephant, reptiles, and birds. DIRECTOR OF PLANNED GIVING, Department of Philanthropy The Director develops, implements and manages ongoing marketing programs to promote planned and estate giving on behalf of the organization. He or she identifies and develops cultivation/solicitation strategies, and actively engages in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of selected prospects through personal contacts/visits. Additionally, the position works closely with the overall Development Department and Senior Management. The Director plans and directs the work of the Planned Giving Department and is responsible for establishing overall objectives and priorities for the department on a long-term and annual basis; actively seeks out marketing opportunities for new partnership initiatives to facilitate direct contact with major donors; ensures that all major and planned giving donors receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact that their gift has on the organization's mission; develops innovative recognition opportunities and materials. He or she prepares and delivers speeches, workshops and presentations to individuals, chapters, units, and boards extensively throughout the year. A university degree in a related field is required, with specialized knowledge related to planned giving and major gifts fund-raising, including a working knowledge of charitable tax law, finance and estate planning tools and techniques. DIRECTOR, Duchess Sanctuary, Oakland, Oregon
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a working Director to provide oversight and direction of the Duchess Sanctuary, incorporating management expertise in the area of sanctuary operations, administration, fundraising, and public outreach. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to supervising all functions associated with live animal care; managing the acquisition/disposition of animals, facility designs and construction, animal nutrition, veterinary care, pasture and land management, and habitat protection; supervising employees and volunteers as needed. CORPORATE MARKETING MANAGER, Companion Animals

FIELD RESPONDER (2), Emergency Services
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking two (2) Field Responders for the Emergency Services section to support disaster/emergency response and disaster education and planning. Duties include extensive travel on short notice to disaster/emergency sites, conducting damage assessments of impacted areas and monitoring disaster/emergency activities and potential developments. Maintain working knowledge of disaster standard procedures and implement during disaster/emergency response; work with the National Disaster Area Response Team and other volunteers during field response including rescue, transport, and sheltering operations. DEPUTY DIRECTOR, Emergency Services
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Deputy Director of Field Operations for the Emergency Services division. Mainly, this individual will work with the Senior Director of Emergency Services to support the Emergency Services program in emergency response as well as disaster education and planning. Some responsibilities for this position, but not limited to, are to develop and maintain a manual of standard procedures for field rescue operations; to develop and maintain operational contacts with relevant individuals and organizations throughout the country with particular emphasis on field rescue; to be able to travel extensively on very short notice to assist in the field as necessary during a disaster/emergency; assimilate and teach the principles of emergency field response management, Incident Command System (ICS) and the National Management System (NIMS); and writing internal reports and responding to routine requests and correspondents regarding animal issues. A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience along with animal handling skills and knowledge of animal protection issues (animal control, shelter experience, etc.) are strongly desired. Experience in some form of emergency operations or response with a working knowledge and experience with NIMS/ICS or commitment to taking and passing required courses within six months strongly preferred. INTERNS, Online Communications
(1) The editorial intern will work directly with website managing editors and program content managers to develop articles and content for hsus.org website. This editorial/writing internship requires excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Responsibilities include: reviewing and editing articles submitted by programs; drafting new stories as assigned by managing editors; performing research, interviews, fact checking and reference as needed; assisting with content review and page migration; and identifying redundancies in material.
(2) The production intern will work directly with website managing editors and program content managers to format, update and create web pages as assigned. This position requires basic HTML and image editing skills as well as familiarity with (or ability to learn) a content management system. Responsibilities include: creating and formatting new pages as assigned; creating, modifying or formatting embedded multimedia (video, slideshows, and images); assisting in prepping and transferring pages from current publishing platform to new content management system; troubleshooting problems with coding/formatting; and identifying redundancies in material. The New York Field Services office of The Humane Society of the United States seeks interns to provide assistance on key projects to the furtherance of our goals in animal protection policy and campaigns in New York State. The intern will focus most of his or her time on public outreach activities in New York City to build constituent support to take legislative and campaign actions. Tasks include: organizing literature tables at events, festivals and high-traffic locales, conducting public outreach activities in targeted legislative districts, and phone-banking to constituents to contact their legislators about pending animal protection legislation. No specific academic major is required; however, preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic, be willing to take on any project, and possess strong communication skills. INTERNS, Wildlife and Habitat Protection
The Wildlife and Habitat Protection section focuses on the defense of all wild animals, both captured and free, from cruelty and avoidable suffering and exploitation, or from threats to their survival or well being. This section is seeking interns to participate in an internship that highlights this mission statement.The internship will focus on certain wildlife campaigns, most notably the ProtectSeals campaign which is aimed at ending the Canadian commercial seal hunt, as well as the ProtectSharks campaign which focuses on ending all shark tournaments throughout the United States. Duties would include some administrative work, entering data into a database, calling sponsors of shark tournaments to encourage them to drop their sponsorship of kill events, reaching out to restaurants to get them on board the Canadian seafood boycott, as well as other duties as needed. CASEWORKER COORDINATOR-WILDE PUPPY MILL TASK FORCE, Campaigns
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Caseworker Coordinator for its Wilde Puppy Mill Task Force in the Campaigns division. The main responsibility for this position is to act as the primary point of contact for complaints about specific puppy mills, breeders, and pet stores and to triage complaints for response or possible further action. Specifically, one would be asked to manage the operation of the Wilde Puppy Mill Hotline; Provide information to individuals regarding possible action they can take against problem puppy sellers, determine which complaints warrant further action by HSUS and pass case information on to the Deputy Manager, Wilde Puppy Mill Task Force; Track reports of puppy mill busts; follow up with agencies and individuals involved and affected for more information; Coordinate solicitation of cases from individuals and to assist constituents who are trying to take action against a puppy mill operations; and to manage the complaint database to track cases by degree of problem, locations, and mode of acquisition for use in media outreach and legislative efforts. Knowledge of law enforcement/animal control preferred with an understanding of puppy mill issues, relevant laws and regulations highly desired. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Controller for its Accounting Division. The main responsibility is to maintain control of all HSUS assets, insure accuracy, and completeness of financial records. Other duties include but are not limited to: manage and direct all accounting functions (including annual audit and payroll) of HSUS and its affiliate organizations, including the international entities; prepare and/or review all compliance filings including tax returns, state charitable solicitation registrations, business licenses, etc.; prepare and maintain $140 million annual budget; prepare and distribute all monthly and annual financial statements for HSUS' multiple funds; establish and maintain all banking relationships; monitor and manipulate cash flow to ensure coverage for $140 million annual expenditures; devise and implement internal controls; and manage accounting of federal grants.
