SCOTLUND HAISLEY
SENIOR DIRECTOR FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES
Scotlund Haisley, who oversees an animal rescue team that responds to natural disasters and man-made emergencies, joined The Humane Society of the United States in January 2008. He brings with him a wealth of experience in innovative shelter design and management; fundraising; emergency management; and animal protection.
For the past seven years he led the Washington (D.C.) Animal Rescue League, where he designed and built an animal shelter unlike any in the world. The shelter, renowned for its calming and nurturing animal housing area, is recognized as a prototype for humane animal sheltering. His leadership at WARL included raising more than $6 million for the massive renovation of its existing facility and ongoing expenses, and led to a tripling of animal adoptions to the community.
Under his direction, the shelter also housed a number of Michael Vick's dogs who had been seized, until they were placed with another facility for assessment and placement.
Prior to his work at WARL, Haisley gained a national reputation as a leader in the animal protection community with his work in New York, California, and Washington, D.C. His international credentials include work with the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi in India as well as work in Puerto Rico.
He has extensive training in technical animal rescue and emergency management. One of the first responders during Hurricane Katrina, Haisley continues efforts in rebuilding and enhancing abilities of animal support agencies in the Gulf Coast region.
An artist, he has sold a number of his paintings of Katrina-rescued animals and other subjects for charity. Haisley's family includes several animals, including a dog named Bergh, named for the pioneering 19th-century animal protector Henry Bergh.
