MARK GLOVER
Director, Humane Society International/UK
Mark Glover joined HSI as director of the United Kingdom office in 2006. Responsible for all day-to-day activities, he specializes in the anti-fur issues, including the campaign to end the Canadian seal hunt.
Mark is an active participant in the Fur Free Alliance and its Design Against Fur competition.
He has witnessed the Canadian seal hunt three times and works closely with the UK government and EU institutions to achieve bans on the import and trade in both seal products and dog and cat fur.
Prior to joining HSI, Mark worked for Greenpeace in the UK as its Wildlife Campaigner and board member. Leaving Greenpeace in 1985, he set up and ran the anti-fur organization, Lynx, which later changed its name to Respect for Animals.
During his time at Greenpeace, Glover was responsible for a campaign that exposed the high levels of mortality of dolphins and orcas at live shows, which led to the end of those displays in the UK.
As a result of a campaign against factory fur farming in the UK—involving a high level lobby, undercover investigations, commissioning scientific reports and opinion polls—the UK government introduced a ban on fur breeding in England and Wales on the grounds of "public morality."
A similar ban was introduced by the Scottish Parliament (to which Mark gave extensive oral and written evidence.)
Mark has a joint degree in Mathematics and Physics and an M.Sc. in Environmental Science.
