ANN CHYNOWETH
DIRECTOR, ANIMAL CRUELTY & FIGHTING CAMPAIGN
Ann Chynoweth has worked in the animal protection field for over 20 years. As senior director of the animal cruelty and fighting campaign for The Humane Society of the United States, her leadership has helped to obtain numerous successes in the enactment and enforcement of significant animal protection laws.
Since heading the campaign in 2004, Chynoweth has celebrated these milestones:
Also in that time, numerous nationally significant animal fighting operations have been raided and shut down, and a successful nationwide reward program was implemented, leading to more than 50 arrests and thousands of animals seized.
Chynoweth's campaign also developed the first-ever grassroots program to combat urban dogfighting with education, dog training classes, and street intervention and mediation for at-risk youth.
Working with law enforcement, she also obtained a number of firsts in the enforcement of animal cruelty laws:
- The first animal cruelty prosecution for the mental suffering of an animal
- The first felony prosecution for animal neglect in Alabama and Tennessee
- The first reported case where a fugitive was extradited for misdemeanor animal cruelty
Chynoweth received her law degree from Vermont Law School in 1994.
