The Humane Society of the United States works continuously to improve the lives of billions of animals around the globe and is committed to practicing environmental stewardship in our own backyard. These efforts were recently applauded by the city of Gaithersburg, Maryland, which awarded The HSUS with an Environmental Award during its 2009 Green Week.

"Protecting the environment is close to the heart of many people at our organization, and in many ways goes hand-in-hand with our work to protect animals," said Krista Rakovan, manager of conferences and events and a member of The HSUS' environmental committee. "It is wonderful to be recognized for the great strides The Humane Society of the United States has made in minimizing our environmental impact at our Gaithersburg, Md., headquarters."
These awards were presented to local businesses, schools and communities with outstanding environmental programs and accomplishments. Winners illustrate how the different facets of a community can simultaneously grow the local green economy; improve business models by incorporating sustainability; work within their neighborhoods to go green; and inspire a new greener generation.
The HSUS developed a multi-faceted environmental stewardship program several years ago, and is constantly implementing new green tactics. Our comprehensive recycling program has been extended to include ink cartridges, batteries, cell phones, chargers, shipping pallets, office supplies, and electronics. The HSUS donates large office furniture and computers to schools in the community. We have also set up a composting station in the lunchroom so that employees can responsibly dispose of biodegradable trash and food.
In addition, The HSUS promotes energy efficiency using renewable soy-based coatings to help cool HVAC systems and participates in the EPA's Green Lights program. A "no-mow" zone on our grounds reduces gasoline consumption and provides habitat for small animals on the property.
"We hope that our actions inspire others to go green as we improve the environment for our employees and the Gaithersburg community," added Rakovan.
