In this era of bestowing awards for just any old accomplishment, The Humane Society of the United States sponsors award ceremonies that actually contribute to the organization's mission. Whether recognizing a U.S. Congresswoman for her work in passing animal welfare legislation or awarding a medal to a Hollywood producer for incorporating an animal issue into a storyline, The HSUS understands the ripple effects created when honoring animal advocates across the country. In other words, one good deed acknowledged inspires another.
The HSUS sponsors several ceremonies, including the bi-annual Humane Awards, the annual Genesis Awards, and the Russell and Burch Award, which is bestowed every three years.

The Joseph Wood Krutch Medal is named for the distinguished writer, naturalist, and public intellectual who spent his last years defending nature and animals. Joseph Wood Krutch (1893-1970) epitomized the same commitment to celebrating animals and preventing cruelty that have motivated The HSUS since its founding in 1954. Forty people have received the award since its inception in 1971. Recipients have included Joy Adamson, Roger Tory Peterson, Loren Eiseley, Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, James Herriot, and Richard Leakey.

The Genesis Awards was launched in 1986 by the late animal advocate and actress Gretchen Wyler. The annual ceremony recognizes members of the film, television, print media, music, and the arts communities for producing outstanding works that raise public understanding of animal issues. Past winners have included movies such as Chicken Run and Babe, such television shows as Dharma & Greg and Providence, and such commentators as Jim Rome and Bill Maher. The event annually attracts a broad range of celebrities from the film, TV, and recording industry.
- The Humane Awards were launched in 2001 to honor those members of the U.S. House and Senate who have sponsored animal friendly legislation as well as those leaders of the corporate and non-profit communities who have incorporated animal friendly practices into their missions. The first Humane Award ceremonies acknowledged six members of the U.S. Congress and four corporate leaders at a gala dinner in downtown Washington, D.C. In March 2009, The HSUS honored 148 leaders of Congress for their work for animals in 2008. The HSUS also recognizes state lawmakers who have helped advance animal protection through humane state legislation.
- The Russell and Burch Award is given every three years to a scientist whose work advances alternative methods that replace or reduce the use of animals in specific procedures, or refine procedures so that animals experience less pain or suffering. The award, which carries a $5,000 prize, is named in honor of William M. Russell and Rex L. Burch, the scientists who formulated the Three Rs approach of replacement, reduction, and refinement.
- The Animals & Society Course Awards are presented annually for academic excellence in the design and instruction of these courses. The awards recognize two college-level courses: An established A&S course currently taught at an institution, and a new A&S course scheduled for instruction. The awards, part of The HSUS's Animals & Society Courses programs, are $1,500 each, and are given to the institutional department in which the course is taught. The goal of the awards is to help foster the availability of high-quality curricula and instruction in a variety of relevant academic fields.
